Have you ever thought something was going to be one way, and then have it turn out to be the complete opposite? Ever had that happen to a whole summer? Meet Josh, our good hearted, 12-year-old protagonist. He was finally getting his chance to make friends in his new town by joining the summer baseball team. However, Josh’s mom has a boyfriend with an overseas job! They have to go to India, leaving poor Josh in the sleepy little town of Carbon City, Washington, with his great step-aunt Ethel. His summer is ruined, with a side dish of cake and shotgun fire.
Or so you’d think. Josh finds an unexpected friend in an unexpected place, and the summer takes a rather adventurous turn. He raises cats, robs graves, and saves the small towns oldest mystery. I recommend this book. It has good characters, and builds a sense of foreshadowing with its switching perspectives.
